While searching for impetus during this project I came
across a historians account of Benjamin Franklin’s invention of the “Long
Arm”,
a device that retrieves books from high shelves in a library. Apparently
Franklin recognized the need for such a tool while struggling to grasp
texts from his own collection. I can empathize with the frustration that
must have resulted from a technology void that, for whatever reason,
seemed to have been ignored by the collective masses. I’ll bet
his friends told told him to invest in a ladder. I recently found myself
in a situation that warranted the use of a tool that doesn’t exist.
I purchased a box spring mattress that couldn’t possibly
fit through a narrow passage on the route to my bedroom. My “friends” explained
that I should simply incise the fabric and sever it’s frame. Once
through the narrow passage (in pieces) I could reassemble the mattress
in my bedroom. Did I mention that I spent two hundred bucks on this thing?.....No
way! Had it not been for this project I may never have discovered the
device that saved my mattress from almost certain worthlessness. Thank
you Boxspringhorn and thank you Mr. Franklin.
